In the 19th century many artists came to Jamaica and produced wonderful drawings and paintings of the people and the landscape. I hope to use these pages to show such work, especially of lesser known artists.

     "In 1869 Blakelock set out for the American West, venturing through Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, California, Mexico, Panama and Jamaica, returning to New York by 1871."

      Gaul, a well-known U.S. artist, spent a very brief stay in Jamaica in the early 1890s. He seems to have enjoyed that brief stay, and drew a number of illustrations based on it, which appeared in several issues of The Century Magazine, a U.S. periodical of the time.       Foreign artists continued to come to Jamaica in the 20th century, but, as the century went on, more and more Jamaican artists contributed their vision.
