The Misses Burton

Miss Susan and Miss Mary Burton were very well-known and highly respected in late 19th century Jamaica for the lodging houses and hotels they operated, mostly in and near Kingston, in those decades.

Nurse Flora

Illustration from the journal of Lady Maria Nugent. It depicts Flora, an enslaved woman who tended Maria during her pregnancy and the birth of her first child, George Edmund. Maria was nervous about the pregnancy and was suspicious of the herbs and charms that Flora suggested she should use to bring forward the birth of the baby.

Nurse Flora is the earliest Afro-Jamaican woman, named in a picture, that I have been able to identify - has anyone an earlier instance? It would be great

to find someone!
